MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 7, 2003 MEETING OF THE RECREATION BOARD

The regular meeting of the Hamburg Recreation Board was called to order by

Vice-President Barry Shollenberger at 7:10 PM.

MEMBERS PRESENT – Anna Heffner, Scott Kreider, Barry Shollenberger.

ALSO PRESENT – Lynda Albright-Borough Manager, June Hilbert-Recreation Director, Lynn Ernst-Secretary

The secretary read the minutes from the November 4, 2002 meeting. A motion was made by Scott Kreider and seconded by Barry Shollenberger to accept the minutes. Motion passed.

BOROUGH MANAGER – Lynda reported that Mike Stasulli will be appointed to the Rec Board at the next council meeting. Tina Yoder has again expressed interest in being on the board; she will be contacted. The pool has been emptied and pressure washed; a crew from Mt. Lake Pool will arrive next week to search for the leak. The firm of Spotts, Stevens & McCoy has been contacted to conduct a study on the pool at a cost of $2500.

It was initially decided that the temporary fence for the ball field would be set up and taken down for each game. The Property Committee has now agreed to leave the fence up for the season. The Committee has also decided to purchase the scoreboard through a grant or a loan because the profits from the snack bar would be greatly diminished by using Coke products at the pool. The location of the scoreboard will be near the tennis courts. Lynda spoke to Jeff Seidel regarding baseball scheduling; he has not yet contacted June.

Lynda reviewed the new swimming pool fee schedule which was adopted by the Property Committee. A family pass is for a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children residing in the same household. It will also apply for 1 adult and 3 children. A babysitter pass for $50 has been established; this may be transferred to any babysitter that a family has employed, and can be used only when the children accompany the babysitter. New pool rules include a stipulation that any child who is not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper. These will be available for purchase at the pool. Lynda reported that the quote received for repair to the bandstand support posts was too high; the Property Committee has asked for other bids.

RECREATION DIRECTOR – June reported that the contract from the Reading Pops has not been signed. She has been haggling with Judy Drey to get the price reduced. This has not been acted on because the Mudflaps have been hired for Community Day on 8/16/03 at $2000. At the last committee meeting it had not been decided if it would be a one or two day event. The committee cannot afford to pay the Reading Pops and the Mudflaps.

All the park employees have been hired, although a few interviews are still scheduled. Aimee Benfer, pool manager, has completed lifeguard training at Albright College and has been certified as an instructor. She has already conducted the first training session for the lifeguards at the Albright pool. Scott suggested that regular evening hours be scheduled at the playground. June replied that they were open some evenings last year (when it was very hot) but not on a regular basis. She also noted that when evening activities are held at the park the pool attendance decreases; this impacts the lifeguard scheduling and raises the number of employee hours that need to be paid.

There will be two regular playground leaders, Brad Biehl and Aaron Wetzel. Anne Boran who is employed as a lifeguard will also conduct the crafts program on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9-11 AM. The craft program will be advertised on the MAC channel and the Website, and flyers will be posted at the pool. A two-day pageant is slated for July; the children and staff will make decorations for the pageant. Scott reported that someone drove over the park at the Island St. entrance. He recommended the crew put up barriers to keep them off. The Primrose St. tot lot has been closed by EPA; no further information was available.

OLD BUSINESS – All Community Day donations for 2002 have been received. The soccer association had the park reseeded in November after the season ended.

NEW BUSINESS – Barry will be resigning after tonight’s meeting for business reasons. He has turned over all Community Day material to Dale Schlenker, who then turned everything over to Lynda. No Community Day meetings have been held to date. Borough Council would like a committee set up to handle the event along with the Recreation Director.

The next meeting will be held Monday, April 28, at 7:00 PM. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:30 PM on motion of Scott Kreider, seconded by Anna Heffner.

Respectfully submitted,

Lynn Ernst, Recording Secretary
