MINUTES FROM THE JULY 1, 2002 MEETING OF THE RECREATION BOARD The regular meeting of the Hamburg Recreation Board was called to order by President Glenn Powers at 7:00 PM. MEMBERS PRESENT – Anna Heffner, Glenn Powers, Barry Shollenberger. Scott Kreider was absent. ALSO PRESENT – June Hilbert-Recreation Director, Aimee Benfer-Pool Manager, Lynn Ernst-Secretary VISITOR – Harold (Buck) Holtzman A motion was made by Barry Shollenberger and seconded by Anna Heffner to accept the minutes of the June meeting. Motion passed. The president recognized Harold Holtzman, Hamburg representative to the Northern Berks Recreation Board. Mr. Holtzman told the board the Northern Berks group is looking to draw people to Hamburg for recreational purposes. Since the borough has received $14,500 from the Wyndcliffe project for recreation, he suggested upgrading the old canal for fishing, ice skating, and birding. He recommended cutting down trees and dredging the canal bed. He stated that Representative David Argall is in favor of the project, and the borough could apply for grants. The board indicated the first step should be a study on possible uses. BOROUGH MANAGER – Lynda is on vacation this week; she sent a memo regarding issues from the last meeting. Glenn stated the original Greenway plan was not for steps. Barry is satisfied that a proper gate is now in place. RECREATION DIRECTOR – June reported that the playground is busy, and the pool is very busy. The basketball court is being kept free of trash. They are adding a minimal amount of water to the pool. The baby pool was closed for two days because of inadequate chlorine levels. The situation has been corrected. Glenn reported that people have been slipping in the baby pool. Barry recommended that the pool be drained and scrubbed with HDH if the problem continues. Tuesday and Wednesday are activity days at the pool. A diving contest was held last week; plans are in process for a Hawaiian celebration in the future. Aerobics classes will be held every Monday and Friday beginning next week. Glenn reported that the new basketball nets are greatly appreciated. Barry complimented June and Aimee on the professional way the pool is operating. OLD BUSINESS – The deposit for the Mudflaps has been mailed. Kids Peace will not be participating at the pool this year due to state regulations regarding licensing of caretakers. The next Community Day meeting will be held Monday, July 8, at pavilion #2 at the park beginning at 7:00 PM. NEW BUSINESS – Anna made a motion that the board recommend that the property committee investigate if a feasibility study is warranted for the restoration and development of the canal. Barry seconded it. Motion passed. The next meeting will be held Monday, August 5, 2002, at 7:00 PM. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM on motion of Barry Shollenberger, seconded by Anna Heffner.
