MINUTES FROM THE JULY 5, 2005 MEETING OF THE REC BOARD The regular meeting of the Hamburg Recreation Board was called to order by President Scott Kreider at 7:00 PM. The following members were present: Anna Heffner, Scott Kreider, Kathy Maberry, and Sylvia Summons. Barbara Heffner was absent. Also present were Lynda Albright, Borough Manager, June Hilbert, Recreation Director, and Lynn Ernst, Secretary. A motion was made by Sylvia Summons and seconded by Kathy Maberry to accept the minutes of the June meeting. Motion passed. BOROUGH MANAGER – Lynda announced that June Hilbert had devised a new fund raiser for the pool. A swim-a-thon will be held having the children swim laps for pledges. There are three levels of pledges. 1. Children will swim laps at $1.00 per lap;non-swimmers can walk the laps. Children will ask family members and friends to pledge $1.00 for each lap they swim. Any swimmer who reaches $100 will receive a certificate and free admission to a big swim and dance party. 2. Individual adults may pledge any amount per lap. 3. Corporate donations of $1000 will receive a permanent plaque at the pool. Businesses may sponsor their employees to complete their pledge. The Hamburg Item, Reading Eagle and Pottsville Republican will publicize this event. Wristbands will be given to all lap swimmers. June will need help from the Rec Board members in contacting businesses for pledges. Lynda will contact Redner’s to enroll in their Sav-a-Tape program. Lynda also reported that the borough must apply for another grant through DCNR. Tammy Wilkinson has already applied for a grant from DCED for no specific amount, just what was in the budget. RECREATION DIRECTOR – June reported that two more lap lanes will be added using ropes. She said that people inquired whether the money raised by the swim-a-thon would keep season ticket prices from being increased. OLD BUSINESS – Anna presented preliminary copies of the five-year plan. A motion was made by Sylvia Summons, seconded by Anna Heffner, to accept the plan. Motion passed. Scott thanked Anna for all the work involved in taking monthly notes and compiling the five-year plan. Anna will annotate the document in a different manner before officially presenting it. There was discussion on how to present the plan to the Property Committee and borough council. It was finally agreed that Lynda would give it to the Property Committee. Anna has no new information on her correspondence regarding the USTA grant. Scott reported that the board members completed their walk-through of borough recreation properties on June 8. They visited the two tot lots and the Dolly Haupt property. Recommendations concerning these places were included in the plan. Kathy reported that she has contacted Paul Mriss, school guidance counselor, regarding using projects from the five-year plan for student senior projects. NEW BUSINESS – Scott asked about using income from the Rupp and Lenhart funds for park improvements. Lynda indicated that the Rupp fund was used for the park, and the Lenhart fund for activities at the park. Scott suggested using fund income for installing path lights at the tot lot. He also questioned whether anyone is aware of the Hawk Ridge tot lot. Information could be included in the packets which are mailed to new residents, and a sign should be placed in the area. Scott also has contacted Dan Roman, a reporter for the Hamburg Item, about more publicity for the park. He inquired whether there were Rec Board applications at the park or pool. He would like something posted at the park and pool inviting interested residents to join the Rec Board. His goal is to increase the membership to seven members. This would require amending the ordinance. The next meeting will be held Monday, August 1, at 7:00 PM. A workshop will be held Wednesday, July 20, at 7:00 PM in the Senior Center. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM on motion by Sylvia Summons, seconded by Anna Heffner.
Respectfully submitted,
