MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 3, 2005 MEETING OF THE RECREATION BOARD

The first order of business at the regular meeting of the Hamburg Recreation Board was reorganization.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Kathy Maberry, Lori Riegel, Sylvia Summons, Tina Yoder.

MEMBER ABSENT: Tammy Wilkinson

ALSO PRESENT: June Hilbert-Recreation Director, Lynn Ernst-Secretary, Bethany Riegel-Visitor, Scott Kreider-Visitor.

Borough Council member Tina Yoder called for nominations for president. Tina Yoder nominated Sylvia Summons, seconded by Kathy Maberry. Tina nominated Kathy Maberry as Vice President, seconded by Sylvia Summons. Sylvia accepted the office of president; Kathy accepted the vice-president position. Sylvia then called the meeting to order. She welcomed new members Lori Riegel and Tina Yoder. She thanked the Community Day Committee members. A motion was made by Kathy Maberry and seconded by Tina Yoder to accept the secretary’s report from the August 1 meeting. Motion passed.

VISITORS – Bethany Riegel accompanied her mother to the meeting. Scott Kreider was present to observe.

There was no report from the borough manager who was absent. June Hilbert, recreation director, reported that she has turned over all bids, specifications and other paperwork regarding the center field food stand countertops to the property committee.

OLD BUSINESS – Sylvia remarked up front that she thinks this is a great board that will get a lot done. A copy of the Rec Board ordinance was given to Lori Riegel. Sylvia mentioned selling poinsettias as a fund raiser. June reported that Teen Challenge can supply them; Sylvia has already contacted them. Sylvia suggested that a Public Relations person be appointed to focus attention on the board and its projects, with the specific intention to having articles printed in The Hamburg Item. She asked June to handle that position; June accepted. Lynn mentioned her call to Christine at the Item office regarding no photos or reports from Community Day. Lori Riegel agreed to take photos hereafter and submit them to the paper.

NEW BUSINESS – Sylvia questioned whether a fall walk-through was necessary. After discussion, it was agreed to meet at the park at 2 PM on Friday, October 21. More fundraisers were discussed. The poinsettia sale is definite; orders will be taken in advance. No prices have yet been approved. The board would like to set up a refreshment stand for the King Frost Parade, but no location has been found. The members will look into setting up on North Third St. in someone’s yard. Tina Yoder appointed June Hilbert as chairman of the 2006 Community Days Committee. Sylvia inquired who is responsible for the agenda. She stated that she will forward agenda information to the secretary before each meeting. Kathy Maberry and Lori Riegel agreed to form a Summer Activities Committee for teenagers at the park next year. Kathy reported she had contacted the Leo Club at the high school about planting flowers at the park. June reported that new ordinances to combat vandalism were being worked on by the Property Committee. Sylvia questioned why the pavilions at the park aren’t rented more. Lynn reported that they have been reserved for almost every weekend this summer. Sylvia stated this should be advertised more. It was agreed that grants would be discussed when Tammy Wilkinson was in attendance. Sylvia has spoken to Kervin Kline about the baseball field press box which was a project of the Lions Club. He will come to a future meeting to address this.

The Community Days Committee wrap-up meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 17, at 7:00 PM in the Senior Center. The Rec Board will meet next on Monday, November 7, 2005, at 7:00 PM.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM on motion of Tina Yoder, seconded by Kathy Maberry.
