RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Tonya reported on a meeting she attended regarding lifeguards. A representative from the Department of Health interpreted the law that a lifeguard is required for every 3400 square feet. Tonya keeps three guards in chairs plus one guard roaming when the pool is full. She recommended that this situation be continued as is. She stated that two benches on the lower end of the pool are obstructing the guards’ view of the baby pool, and recommended that they be moved to another position at the end of the season.

Tonya stated that improper parking is still a problem. Basketball players like to park in the NO PARKING THIS SIDE and KEEP OFF THE GRASS spots. She asks them to move and they comply.

The playground season will continue until August 17. The playground equipment is holding up well.

OLD BUSINESS

Barry reported that the Hamburg Community Day posters have been placed all over town, and the first ads will appear in the Merchandiser and The Hamburg Item this week.

Glenn reported that the new, better nets for the basketball court are holding up very well. They are a combination of cotton and nylon material. He recommended that we continue to buy these nets from Dick’s. He also stated that the Little League concession stand and the Legion team concession stand have been emptied and cleaned.

There has been no vandalism since the last episode. The police are locking the lavatories at night and the park crew is opening them to clean every morning. They are not being stocked with paper products to prevent unknown persons from clogging the toilets and sinks.

NEW BUSINESS

Tonya received a request from Joe with Kidspeace to continue the swimming program next year. She stated that the program has been successful this year; a few problems have been noted with the children not obeying the guards. Also, the adult counselors that accompany the children do not go in the water with them.

Barry has a problem with people who live outside the tax base using the pool for less money than the residents pay. He estimated that there is no income being made at $100 per week using three guards on duty for four and one-half hours a week. It was agreed that no commitment for next year would be made at this time.

Barry reported that the Community Day committee is receiving more money than ever before for this year’s event. He would like the committee to be a separate entity with separate funds for next year. Kim reported that Community Day was a borough function, and last year’s event was a loss. This will be discussed at a later time. The next committee meeting is scheduled for August 13 at the park.

The next meeting of the Recreation Board will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at 7:00 PM.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:40 PM on motion of Glenn Powers, seconded by Scott Kreider.

Respectfully submitted,

Lynn Ernst, Recording Secretary
